On July 13, 2019, Kilifi County Government made a significant move to boost local economic growth by allocating Ksh100m to be loaned out to cooperative societies and registered small enterprises.
The funds will be disbursed through Mbegu Fund, a microfinance company based in the county, and will be interest-free credit facilities of up to Ksh2m for each registered group.
Speaking during a cooperatives stakeholder meeting, County Executive Committee Member for Trade and Cooperatives, Nahida Mohamed Athman, emphasized the importance of cooperative societies in tackling poverty and creating wealth.
Athman urged residents of Kilifi County to join cooperative societies and take advantage of the loan facilities to improve their economic status.
Meanwhile, National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) Chairperson, Regina Ndambuki, cautioned women and youth groups in Makueni to ensure they meet the requisite requirements before applying for money from the fund.
She noted that many groups had been disqualified for not following the guidelines, including proof of projects undertaken, and urged local leaders to unite to achieve transformative development for the county.
