Published on July 13, 2019, Ricky Ponting, the former Australia captain, has expressed concerns that England's success in the World Cup may affect their chances of retaining the Ashes.
England's emphatic eight-wicket win over Australia in the semi-finals and their subsequent victory over New Zealand in the final have given the hosts significant momentum heading into the five-test Ashes series next month.
'It probably does, to be honest,' Ponting said, when asked whether England's 50-over success could spill over into the Ashes.
He noted that the country would be on a high, and the players would be on a huge high after the World Cup, which could have an impact on their Ashes campaign.
However, Ponting also pointed out that the Ashes series is a completely different series, with different players and captains, and that England would take as much as they can from their World Cup success into the Ashes.
Australia holds the urn after thrashing England 4-0 on home soil in the 2017-18 Ashes, and the first Ashes test starts at Edgbaston on August 1.
