Businesswoman Joyce Akinyi, a repeat offender in drug trafficking cases, is currently in police custody after her arrest on Saturday at Deep West club on Lang'ata Road.

According to police, Akinyi was arrested together with two other suspects, Fellis Anyango and a Congolese man, over allegations of drug trafficking.

Police claim to have recovered 4kg of white powder believed to be cocaine during the operation, which was conducted by officers from the DCI Special Crimes Prevention Unit together with the Anti-Narcotics department.

DCI head of Anti-Narcotics, Hamisi Masaa, stated that police will hold Akinyi and the two suspects the entire weekend, but declined to comment on laboratory tests about the powder believed to be cocaine.

Investigations have revealed that some of those arrested directed police to Akinyi and were part of a distribution network, with one detective stating, "All the suspects arrested with the small sachets said they had bought from that club."

Akinyi has a history of drug trafficking cases, with her last arrest being in 2015. In 2013, she was arrested with a Budalang'i MP at Isinya on the Nairobi-Namanga highway over claims of drug trafficking, and was later released after insisting they were carrying maize flour imported from Tanzania.

She was also detained in India in 2008 after authorities found her with an undeclared Sh7.59 million, which was being investigated by New Delhi's Revenue Intelligence department and the Narcotics Bureau.
