July 13, 2019, marks the day I reflect on the life of Elizabeth Wangui Kimunya, a woman whose story I first encountered in 2008. Her tragic fate serves as a poignant reminder of the depths to which humanity can sink, and the importance of acknowledging and learning from our past mistakes.

Elizabeth's story began in January 2008, when she was brought to our hospital in Eldoret, having suffered the loss of family members in a church fire sparked by arsonists. The fire was a brutal manifestation of the ethnic violence that ravaged our country after the disputed 2007 elections. Elizabeth's trauma was compounded by the fact that she had to care for a young boy who had suffered severe burns in the fire.

As a medical professional, I was struck by the magnitude of Elizabeth's trauma and the challenges she faced in her recovery. Despite the difficulties, she demonstrated remarkable resilience and a determination to find meaning in her life. Her story is a testament to the human spirit's capacity for healing and growth.

However, Elizabeth's story also serves as a stark reminder of the need for our country to confront its dark past. The ethnic violence that ravaged our nation in 2008 was a shameful episode in our history, and one that we must never forget. By acknowledging and learning from our mistakes, we can work towards creating a more just and equitable society for all.

As I reflect on Elizabeth's story, I am reminded of the importance of speaking out against violence and promoting a culture of peace and understanding. It is only by working together that we can build a brighter future for ourselves and for generations to come.
