Published on July 13, 2019, a family in Kiambu has been grappling with a heartbreaking situation for over 25 years.
33-year-old Peter Ngugi from Wangige village in Kabete Sub-county has been chained due to a mental disorder that requires special care and constant supervision.
His elder brother George Ndungu revealed that the family had exhausted all options after visiting various hospitals in vain, leaving them with no choice but to chain Peter for his own safety and the family's well-being.
"It has been hard for us as the immediate family, and our personal lives have been undermined," George said.
The family has faced numerous challenges, including financial difficulties in providing Peter's basic needs, and the wrath of villagers who accused them of torturing Peter by chaining him.
According to their mother, Elizabeth Wanjiku, the family has struggled to find suitable care facilities for Peter, who requires constant attention due to his condition.
"It is a great challenge for us to dress him and provide shelter, especially with his current health condition that makes him destroy anything around him," Mrs. Elizabeth said.
The family is now calling for help from well-wishers to build a permanent structure for Peter where he can receive the care he needs and be unchained.
