On March 19, 2022, Africa's 100m record holder Ferdinand Omanyala will headline the second day of the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade, Serbia. The event will feature top athletes from around the world, including 100m Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs of Italy and USA's Christian Coleman, the defending champion.
Omanyala has had an outstanding indoor season, running 6.57 seconds three weeks ago to finish fourth at the Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais in Lievin, France. This time still stands as the national record, but he faces a huge task as he seeks to medal at the three-day indoor showpiece in the men's 60m.
He will line up in heat six of the preliminaries at 12:45pm alongside Poland's Adrian Brzezinski, who boasts the same Personal Best (PB) time as the Kenyan. Jamaican Nigel Ellis, Barbadian Mario Burke, and others will also compete in the heat.
Kenyan duo Daniel Simiu and Jacob Krop have also sailed through to the final of the men's 3000m after finishing second in their respective heats. Noah Kibet has made it to the final of the men's 800m, promising to run 1:46.0 in the final.
Elsewhere, Cuban triple jumper Lazaro Martinez has won gold at the World Athletics Indoor Championships, earning the title in the space of just five weeks. Martinez had never competed indoors until last month but has now earned gold at the World Indoor Championships.
