According to Dr. Jamin Brahmbhatt, a urologist at Orlando Health, one of the harsh realities of aging is that body parts begin to sag. This includes the testicles, which can start to sit lower than in younger years. However, Brahmbhatt notes that this is usually a normal occurrence.
What Causes Sagging Testicles? ¶
Testicles hang lower than the rest of the body because they prefer to be slightly cooler, which is ideal for sperm production. Lax scrotal skin allows the testicles to hang lower when the internal temperature rises, such as after exercise. Conversely, when in a cold room, the testicles shrink closer to the body for warmth.
With age, skin loses collagen, causing the dermis to become thin and stretchy, leading to saggy skin, including the genitals. Brahmbhatt notes that most of his patients begin to notice a difference in their 60s or 70s.
When is Sagging a Problem? ¶
While some sagging is normal, excessive sagging can make it difficult to find clothes, sleep, or even go to the bathroom. Brahmbhatt notes that low-hanging testicles aren't typically a problem unless they impact quality of life. However, excessive sagging can cause pain due to the stretching of the skin.
Medical problems, such as inguinal hernias or cysts, can also cause testicles to appear saggy. If you notice any unusual changes, it's essential to consult a doctor.
Preventing Sagging Testicles ¶
Following basic skin care tips can help maintain healthy skin, including not smoking, avoiding sun exposure, limiting alcohol consumption, and maintaining a healthy body weight, as advised by the American Academy of Dermatology.
Research suggests that diets heavy in sugar may accelerate aging, according to a paper published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology.
Treating Sagging Testicles ¶
There is no proven method to prevent sagging testicles through exercises or reducing masturbation frequency. Brahmbhatt notes that there are no medications or creams that work. However, one tried-and-true treatment is Scrotoplasty, which involves removing excess skin and tightening it up. This procedure is usually only performed when saggy skin impacts a person's quality of life.
