On July 12, 2019, the Kenyan government issued a directive to the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) to shut down the paybills of all betting companies within 48 hours, effectively giving gamblers 48 hours to withdraw their money.
However, SportPesa, a giant in the gaming industry, has expressed disappointment with the 'recent malicious actions' by the BCLB.
The firm stated that the regulator's abrupt measures only serve to discourage and disrupt business, and that the prejudicial process followed by the regulator has the potential to drive the industry underground and have far-reaching repercussions on the social and economic agenda of the country.
