On July 6, 2019, Prof Peter Mbithi left the University of Nairobi, with Prof Isaac Mbeche taking his place as vice-chancellor. However, a petitioner, George Baraza, sought to reinstate Prof Mbithi through the Employment and Labour Relations court.
Universities Academic Staff Union (Uasu) has vowed to protect the institution from what they call "negative forces" attempting to derail the ongoing reforms. Dr George Omondi, Uasu chapter secretary at the university, warned that two council members are secretly working to reinstate Prof Mbithi.
"The University must be supported by all of us to get back to its feet," Dr Omondi said. He urged progressive council members to remain vigilant and resist the "dirty tricks" of corrupt individuals.
Uasu also cautioned staff who participate in meetings aimed at reinstating Prof Mbithi, warning them of potential disciplinary action. The union supports the management's efforts to implement reforms, including staff relocation and best practices.
