July 12, 2019, marked a significant milestone for me as I bid farewell to the media industry after nine-and-a-half years of dedicated service.
My decision to leave was not taken lightly, and it was only after careful consideration and a new opportunity presented itself that I decided to join the Aga Khan University as the Director of the Innovation Centre, Graduate School of Media and Communications.
As I embark on this new chapter in my career, I am filled with a mix of emotions - excitement, nervousness, and a sense of purpose.
My departure coincides with the fifth anniversary of my weekly column, a significant milestone that I am proud to have achieved.
Over the years, I have earned a reputation as a 'controversial columnist' and have been a prominent figure in the swampy parts of the Internet, aka the blogs.
When I started out in 2014, Kenya's media industry was still feeling the effects of the digital disruption, and editors and executives were experimenting with different content types and formats to stay afloat.
However, things have changed significantly since then, and the industry is now at a crossroads, with the future of journalism hanging in the balance.
As I look to the future, I am aware of the challenges that lie ahead, but I am also excited about the opportunities that this new chapter presents.
My new assignment is more exciting than challenging, and I am committed to delivering high-quality journalism that is true to the spirit of independent media.
As a columnist and commentator, I have the burden of writing the truth, giving opinions on issues that matter, and I believe I can do this more effectively in my new role.
I want to assure my readers that my number one allegiance lies with them, and I will continue to write with the same passion and commitment that I have always had.
