Kenya's national basketball team is gearing up for the Africa Cup of Nations in Mali next month, with high-intensity training sessions at Ngong Hills.

Under the guidance of coaches Cliff Owuor and Carey Odhiambo, the team has been in residential training since their return from the Fiba Africa Zone Five qualifiers in Kampala, where they made history by defeating Egypt and securing a spot in the continental finals.

President Uhuru Kenyatta congratulated the team on their impressive performance, and the Kenya Basketball Federation is now seeking government support to help the team prepare for the Mali assignment.

Kenya Basketball Federation chairman Paul Otula and treasurer Peter Orero have appealed to the government to provide transport and accommodation for the team, saying, "We as a federation have made sure that the team is in residential training and would want a helping hand from the government to enable us book the tickets and accommodate the teams in Mali."

The team will be treated to a thanksgiving dinner by sponsors MadGoat at Nairobi's Carnivore Restaurant on Saturday, and the final travelling team is expected to be named on Tuesday.
