On July 12, 2019, 58-year-old Henry Mutinda became the first patient to undergo a brain surgery at Machakos level 5 referral hospital, marking a significant milestone in the hospital's history.

Lead surgeon Sam Njiru and his team successfully removed a brain tumour from Mutinda, who had been suffering from frontal swelling and weakness of the right side of the body.

According to Dr. Doreen Mwiroba, Mutinda's patient history revealed a frontal Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) after an MRI scan.

The complex surgery, which lasted three hours, was a result of the hospital's efforts to provide quality healthcare services to its patients.

Speaking after the successful operation, Dr. Njiru said, 'This is a milestone achievement for Machakos level 5 and a testimony that the Universal Health Coverage program is a practical solution to the country's healthcare service delivery.'
