July 12, 2019 - Google has rolled out an update to the Instant Camera feature of the Google Translate app for Android users.
The Google Translate Instant Camera allows users to launch the app, point their camera at text or a sign written in a foreign language, and have it automatically translated into their chosen language.
With the latest update, Google has added support for 60 more languages, bringing the total number of languages that can be translated from to 88, and the total number of languages that can be translated to to at least 105.
The update utilizes Neural Machine Translation (NMT) technology, which can auto-detect the source language and instantly translate to the user's chosen language, reducing errors by 55% to 85% in certain language translations, according to Google.
However, a quick trial of the new feature suggests that it may not always produce the touted accuracy, particularly in Swahili translations, which are often plagued by errors.
Users who have installed Google Translate can update to the latest version in the Google Play Store via the link below.
