Investigations into alleged death of 11 infants at KNH underway ¶
July 12, 2019
Investigations into the alleged death of eleven infants at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) are underway, with authorities urging for sobriety.
KNH Head of Research and Programs Dr. John Kinuthia stated that a full report on the claims will be released by the hospital management once investigations are finalized.
The eleven babies reportedly succumbed last week at the hospital's newborn unit, with a drug-resistant bacterium known as Klebsiella suspected to be the cause among other factors compounded by alleged poor state of the ward.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Klebsiella is a type of Gram-negative bacteria that can cause different types of healthcare-associated infections, including pneumonia, bloodstream infections, wound or surgical site infections, and meningitis.
Patients in healthcare settings are at risk for Klebsiella infections, particularly those who are receiving treatment for other conditions, have devices like ventilators or intravenous catheters, or are taking long courses of certain antibiotics.
