The Energy Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced a significant increase in forex and fuel charges for July power bills, affecting consumers across the country.
As of July, the forex charge has risen to Sh4.52 per unit of electric power, while the fuel levy has increased by Sh3.67 per unit consumed.
According to EPRA, the weakening of the Kenya shilling and escalating fuel prices have combined to drive up electricity prices through the monthly adjusted fuel surcharge levy and forex adjustment charges.
As a result, homes and businesses will pay an additional Sh900 million in fuel costs, based on average monthly consumption.
The new charges took effect on Friday, July 12, for pre-paid consumers, with post-paid users set to feel the pain later in the month.
The government has promised to reduce costly thermal power and increase the use of wind and solar energy, which could lead to cheaper electricity and a reduction in the fuel cost adjustment levy in bills.
