Algeria Qualifies for AFCON Semifinals After Beating Ivory Coast 4-3 in Penalties

Algeria has qualified for the semifinals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a thrilling 4-3 win over Ivory Coast in a penalty shootout on July 11, 2019, at the Suez Stadium.

The match, which was a quarterfinal encounter, ended 1-1 after extra time, forcing the teams to proceed to the penalty shootout.

Algeria's Sofiane Feghouli scored the opening goal in the 20th minute, but Ivory Coast's Jonathan Kodjia equalized in the 62nd minute.

The Desert Foxes, however, held their nerve in the penalty shootout, converting four of their five penalties to secure a spot in the semifinals.

Algeria will now face Nigeria in the semifinals, while Ivory Coast's campaign came to an end.
