On July 5, 2019, a tragic road accident took the life of Karanja Kabage, a prominent lawyer and politician. He was laid to rest at his home in Mang'u, Rongai, Nakuru County, on a Friday, surrounded by friends, family, and dignitaries.
According to autopsy reports, Kabage succumbed to cardiac arrest. The National Police Service had ordered an immediate investigation into his death, led by Inspector General Hillary Mutyambai.
On July 6, 2019, the National Police Service Director of Corporate Communications, Charles Owino, released a statement detailing the events leading up to the accident. Kabage was driving a black Land Cruiser VX along the Southern Bypass from Ole Sereni direction towards Kikuyu when he veered off to the wrong side of the road, slowed down, and attempted to make a U-turn before hitting the pavement.
A taxi driver and a good samaritan came to his rescue, driving him to Nairobi Hospital, where he had requested to be taken. President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy, Dr. William Ruto, were among those who attended his burial ceremony.
Kabage had a distinguished career in the insurance sector before joining business and politics. He served as a director at African Reinsurance Corporation and First Reinsurance Brokers Limited, and was a board member of the Kenya Private Sector Alliance, National Social Security Fund (NSSF), Labour Advisory Board, and Energy Regulatory Authority Commission, among others.
