On March 10, 2022, BasiGo, a Nairobi-based startup, launched its first electric buses for passenger use in the city. The buses, designed by BYD Automotive, are part of a pilot program in partnership with Citi Hoppa and East Shuttle.
The electric buses will operate on routes between the city centre and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, as well as on the Eastlands side of Nairobi. This initiative aims to provide passengers with a sustainable transportation option and reduce the city's carbon footprint.
According to BasiGo, the buses arrived in the country in December 2021 and underwent extensive validation and reliability testing before the launch. The company has partnered with Kenya Power and Lighting Company to provide reliable charging infrastructure.
Kenya Power CEO and Acting Managing Director, Eng. Rosemary Oduor, emphasized the company's commitment to supporting the electrification of transportation and mitigating the effects of climate change. Jit Bhattacharya, CEO and Co-Founder at BasiGo, stated that Kenya's abundant renewable electricity makes it an ideal location for sustainable public transit.
The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum Principal Secretary noted that the launch of the electric buses is a step towards building a sustainable transport sector in Nairobi. Citi Hoppa Operations Director expressed excitement about piloting the new electric bus technology and its potential to positively impact the environment.
BasiGo is now taking reservations for the K6 Electric Bus, a 25-seat, 250km range electric bus that recharges in less than 4 hours. The company offers a unique Pay-As-You-Drive battery financing program, allowing customers to purchase the K6 for KES 5 Million plus a daily subscription fee equal to KES 20 per kilometre.
Delivery of the first locally assembled K6 Electric Buses is expected to begin in the second half of 2022.
