Safaricom has announced a Ksh 5 million sponsorship for the inaugural Afro-Asia FinTech Festival 2019, a two-day event themed 'Sustainable Finance; Inclusive and green', which will be held at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies on July 15th and 16th, 2019.

The festival, modelled after the Singapore FinTech Festival, aims to bring together over 5,000 participants, policymakers, industry leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators, and researchers from across the world to exchange ideas, forge partnerships, and nurture thriving Fintech ecosystems.

According to Sitoyo Lopokoiyit, Chief Financial Services Officer at Safaricom, the festival presents opportunities to showcase the progress made by Safaricom towards financial technology and interact with peers in FinTech across the globe.

“Two years ago, we opened up our Daraja API portal giving over 16,000 developers an opportunity to integrate their businesses with M-PESA seamlessly. This is in line with our strategy to deepen financial inclusion and give developers a chance to come up with new innovations,” said Sitoyo.

Dr Patrick Njoroge, Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya, expressed excitement about hosting the unique event, which he said shows where Kenya stands as an African country in the spectrum of Fintech.
