Published on July 12, 2019, Nairobi News has uncovered a disturbing trend of neglect by the Kenyan government towards the national women volleyball team, Malkia Strikers, while they compete abroad.

The team, competing at the Women's Africa Nations Championship in Egypt, has been in a state of discontent, with senior players complaining of being overlooked by the government.

According to the players, no government official has visited them in camp in Nairobi, and they have not received any allowance from the government.

"No one has paid us a single allowance from government," the players explained. "We just read through the media Harambee Stars players are camping in Europe and earning millions to compete in the same tournament."

Contrastingly, Harambee Stars players were each paid Sh1.5 million for competing in the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, with the government setting aside Sh244 million for the team's preparation.

The Malkia Strikers are running for an unprecedented tenth continental title and will face Botswana in Cairo on Wednesday evening.
