On July 12, 2019, Somali Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Ahmed Isse Awad rejected reports of planned maritime talks between Somalia and Kenya.
According to Ambassador Awad, the news of a meeting between Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo and his Kenyan counterpart, Uhuru Kenyatta in Addis Ababa next week is 'fake news.'
The diplomatic ties between the two neighboring states have deteriorated after Somalia took the case to the International Court of Justice for hearing, while Kenya wants to resolve the dispute out of court.
Kenyan media had reported an effort by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali to bring the two regional leaders into the negotiation table to resolve the maritime border dispute.
