On July 12, 2019, Cliff Ombeta, a prominent Kenyan lawyer, made headlines for his unconventional courtroom fashion sense.
Representing five police officers charged with the murder of lawyer Willie Kimani and two others, Ombeta appeared before Justice Jessie Lessit at Milimani law courts wearing sweatpants, a snapback, and a casual jacket.
Lawyers typically dress formally in suits when appearing in court, but Ombeta's attire sparked surprise and attention.
According to sources, Ombeta had previously delayed the case and had also failed to appear in court the previous day due to illness.
When summoned to appear before Justice Lessit, Ombeta claimed he was still unwell and unable to represent his clients, stating, 'What I am ailing from for how long and what it is is not important. Let my ailment be about me coz am the one who is in pain. Please leave me alone to ail i’m the one in pain. Are you happy that i’m in such a situation?'
Justice Lessit responded by saying that Ombeta was not on trial and that his privacy should be respected.
The case was subsequently mentioned for Tuesday, with Ombeta indicating that he would not be available on Monday.
