July 12, 2019, marked a significant day in the life of American R&B singer R Kelly, as he was arrested on Thursday on sex trafficking charges. This arrest comes five months after he was released on a Ksh100 million bond.
The 52-year-old singer, known for hits like 'I Am a Flirt,' is facing obstruction of justice charges as well as 13 counts of federal sex crimes, including child pornography.
According to US Attorney spokesperson Joseph Fitzpatrick, more details about the case will be divulged on Friday.
It's worth noting that R Kelly was previously arrested in Chicago in February on 10 counts involving four women, three of whom were minors when the alleged abuse occurred.
Prosecutors later added 11 more sex-related counts to the charges facing R Kelly in May, following a woman's accusation of abuse while she was underage.
The accusations against Kelly are alleged to have taken place between 1998 and 2010.
Despite the charges, R Kelly has pleaded not guilty and has fiercely defended himself, stating that the accusations are meant to tarnish his reputation and 'kill him.'
Confirming his client's arrest, R Kelly's lawyer, Steve Greenberg, told the Chicago Sun-Times that Kelly's arraignment date and time are yet to be set.
