Kenyan gamblers have been given a two-day window to withdraw their money from betting firms listed for closure, following a government directive.

According to a statement from the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB), dated July 11, 2019, gamblers have until July 13, 2019, to withdraw their cash from online wallets.

"This is to permit you to allow gamers of the subject firms to withdraw any funds they may have deposited in the material period within forty-eight hours from the date hereof and duly notify them of the same, quoting this letter as authority," the statement from BCLB's acting director, Liti Wambua, read.

The government has been cracking down on betting firms in recent months, with 27 companies having their licenses withdrawn for failing to meet tax compliance requirements.

Earlier this week, the government ordered telecommunication companies to withdraw the betting firms' pay bill numbers, and banks were also asked to take action.

The list of affected firms includes SportPesa, Betin, Betway, and several others.
