Published on July 12, 2019, a recent study revealed that only 23% of employees aspire to become managers, and even fewer enjoy managing others.

As a young professional, it's natural to assume that a managerial role will bring success and fulfillment. However, this may not always be the case.

True leadership is about more than power and ego; it's about bringing out the best in others and harnessing their strengths to achieve collective success.

Before accepting a promotion, ask yourself: Do you really want to manage others, or are you more interested in growing your visibility at work and having more input into business decisions?

Effective leaders have an inherent desire to develop others and drive them towards success. They shift their mind-set from 'what's in it for me?' to 'what's in it for others?'

Good managers often double up as good teachers, and great teachers are also great learners. They listen closely to the ideas of their subordinates and work together to come up with new strategies.

Leaders must be willing to have crucial conversations, some of which may put them at loggerheads with others. They must be confident and knowledgeable when communicating with their subordinates.

Stepping into a managerial position means accepting the responsibility of leading the pack, and not everyone will agree with your choices all the time. You have to be OK with that.

Are you ready to shift your mind-set and meet the needs of your team? As a manager, you must move away from thinking like an individual and start thinking like a leader.

One sure way to know if you are ready for management is if you are a leader even in your current position. If you've been leading from the front in contributing to the success of your company, consider yourself ready for the next step.
