On July 12, 2019, an 83-year-old Kenyan woman, Lydia Mumbi Ndirangu, was arraigned in Nyeri court after being arrested with marijuana.
Appearing before Resident Magistrate Nelly Kariuki, Ndirangu pleaded guilty to being in possession of 600 grams of bhang worth Sh500.
According to Area Assistant Chief John Waruru, authorities had been monitoring Ndirangu for a long time, suspecting her of trafficking the drug to her son to sell to the youth in the area.
Her case will be read to her on July 15, 2019, and she will remain in police custody until then.
Her arrest comes after a Nyeri court handed a 30-year jail sentence to a middle-aged woman, Rose Wanjiru, in May 2019 for trafficking bhang worth Sh2,820.
