Published on July 12, 2019, organic farming in Kenya has emerged as a lucrative business opportunity for farmers. The demand for organic produce, particularly in foreign countries, has been overwhelming due to its richness in natural nutrients.
William Luchera, a 69-year-old farmer from Mundaha village in Khwisero, Kakamega County, is one such success story. He has been practicing organic farming on his one-and-a-half acre parcel of land for several years, growing high-value crops like tissue culture bananas and other fruits.
Luchera's venture has been a huge success, with him earning tens of thousands of shillings in a good month. He has even partnered with the Kenya Agricultural Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO) to sell some of his produce, with KALRO releasing 250 plantlets to sell for him at Sh200 each.
The net shed he built to nurture and develop banana plantlets has turned him into a celebrity farmer in the area, with local Agriculture Ministry officers using his land as a demo plot. Luchera's success story is a testament to the potential of organic farming in Kenya.
