On July 10, 2019, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga expressed his disapproval of the decision by members of Parliament to increase their salaries and allowances.
Speaking at his Nairobi office, Raila stated that the move will have far-reaching consequences, including making the country unattractive for foreign investment.
‘If the trend continues, the cost of doing business in this country is going to be very high,’ he said.
He also warned that the decision will set a bad precedent for other public servants, including teachers, doctors, and nurses, who may also demand salary increases.
Raila emphasized the need for MPs to lead by example and find ways to reduce the ballooning wage bill.
He expressed support for the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) and stated that there should be no compromise on the matter.
Additionally, Raila addressed the impasse between Taita Taveta Governor Granton Samboja and the county's MCAs, suggesting that the leaders should seek a fresh mandate from the people if efforts to resolve the budget stalemate fail.
