Published on July 12, 2019, the National Land Commission (NLC) has declared that a Sh6 million land claimed by a school and a private developer belongs to the learning institution.
Tumaini House School, a Government institution in Barut, has been embroiled in a dispute over the 3.6-acre land with a private developer who had laid claim on the property without any papers.
NLC coordinator Frank Kibelekenya said the private developer's actions were unfortunate, adding that the developer was currently constructing a road in the school land without any clear purpose.
“It is so unfortunate that the private developer has encroached land belonging to a school. He is currently constructing a road in the school land and we do not even know where the road is leading to and why he decided to build it,” said Mr Kibelekenya.
The school's management had written to the commission on June 25 requesting it to close the road passing within its property, citing security risks to students and staff.
“Board of Management of Tumaini House School requests that you help close the road between Miti Mingi Mbaruk and Miti Mingi Mbaruk as it is being constructed on school land,” read the letter school principal Anne Owino wrote to NLC.
A resident, Grace Chelanga, who initially owned the disputed land before selling it to the school, expressed her concern over the developer's actions.
“I do not know who the developer is. All I know is the land belonged to my late husband. I decided to sell part of it to school,” Chelanga said.
