Counties have until the end of the day to clear Sh51 billion in unpaid bills, with the government threatening to take action against those that fail to meet the deadline.

According to the Nation, the deadline was set by the National Treasury and is part of efforts to clear the arrears owed to suppliers and contractors.

Failure to meet the deadline could result in the government taking action against the defaulting counties, including withholding their share of revenue.

It is estimated that the unpaid bills have been outstanding for several months, with some counties owing as much as Sh10 billion.

The National Treasury has been working with the counties to clear the arrears, but some have been slow to respond.

As of July 11, 2019, the deadline for clearing the unpaid bills was set, and counties were given until the end of the day to meet the deadline.
