Published on July 11, 2019, a car bomb killed 11 people and injured many others in Syria's Afrin city, which Turkey-backed rebels captured from Kurdish fighters the previous year.

The blast struck an entrance to the city, killing civilians, including children, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitoring group.

Many other people were injured in the explosion, with some suffering severe injuries, the Observatory and medical sources reported.

Afrin lies north of Aleppo, near the border with Turkey, and was previously held by the Kurdish YPG militia until last year's Turkey-backed offensive.

Later that day, a car bomb exploded in front of a church in the northeast city of Qamishli, which the YPG controls, a witness and state news agency SANA reported.

Although major fighting has subsided in many parts of Syria, the conflict remains marked by insecurity, with bombings and other attacks targeting civilians in areas controlled by all sides.
