Published on July 11, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko's plans to retrench old local authority workers without benefits have sparked a heated dispute with the Kenya County governments workers Union.

The union's Secretary General Roba Duba has vowed to oppose the move, labeling it 'total gangster-ism' and a blatant disregard for the rights of workers.

According to Duba, the county government owes pension schemes like Laptrust and Lapfunds a staggering Sh. 20 billion in unpaid pension funds, leaving retrenched employees with little hope of survival.

Sonko has repeatedly stated his intention to retrench old workers, citing their lack of energy and technological skills as reasons for their redundancy.

However, the union remains resolute in its opposition, with Duba questioning the logic behind retrenching workers without providing them with benefits or a means of survival.
