On July 11, 2019, police at the Coast made a significant seizure of ivory in Kwale, arresting two suspects in the process.

According to Francis Kihara, the Kaloleni Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss, the two suspects were nabbed by undercover DCI officers working on a tip-off from their colleagues at the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS).

The suspects, 57-year-old Hussein Wanjala and 20-year-old Stephen Riziki, a Ugandan national, were caught attempting to sell 82 kilograms of ivory to the undercover officers for Sh300,000.

The ivory was concealed in four pieces, hidden in a sack.

This is not the first time such a seizure has been made in the region. In December 2018, another man was arrested with 11 pieces of ivory weighing 55 kilograms in a forest in Kaloleni, Kilifi County.
