On July 11, 2019, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (Nafdac) in Nigeria announced a ban on the sale of high-strength agricultural insecticides, citing their link to recent cases of people killing themselves.
These insecticides, which can be easily purchased in shops and from hawkers, have become popular in households due to their effectiveness in dealing with pests.
As part of the measures, Nafdac has ordered brand owners and distributors to recall and withdraw their products from markets and supermarkets, and has also banned the hawking of all agro-chemical formulations with immediate effect.
