On 11 July 2019, Tanzania's Foreign Minister Paramagamba Kabudi made a statement that has raised concerns about the fate of investigative journalist Azory Gwanda, who went missing in 2017.
Gwanda was last seen leaving his farm in a white Land Cruiser with four men his wife did not recognize, according to his wife, Anna Pinoni.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has been campaigning for the government to launch a credible investigation into Gwanda's case, as he was investigating cases of mysterious killings in his community before his disappearance.
Part of Mr Kabudi's reply to a question about Gwanda's disappearance was: "The state is dealing with all those who have unfortunately died and disappeared in Rufiji... it was very painful for someone who was doing his job to pass on".
