Kenya Newspapers Review: July 11

On Thursday, July 11, the investigation into the KSh 21 billion Arror and Kimwarer dams scandal took a new turn.

According to reports, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has been accused of misusing KSh 14.8 billion meant for tax payment to fund the travel expenses of county officials.

The KRA's Chief Accountant reported that the money was used to fund trips for governors, county officials, and other representatives within and outside the country.

Approximately KSh 9.43 billion was spent on domestic trips, while KSh 5.45 billion was used to fund foreign trips.

This is a 112.3% increase from the KSh 7 billion used during the same period in the 2017/18 financial year.

Meanwhile, the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji have traveled to Italy to investigate the KSh 21 billion Arror and Kimwarer dams scandal.

The investigation aims to uncover the involvement of 22 individuals, including a cabinet minister and other high-ranking officials.

The assets acquired from the funds meant for the dams have been seized.

Additionally, Safaricom has written to the Betting and Licensing Board (BLCB) requesting clarification on the shutdown of SportPesa's paybill numbers.

The company claims that the shutdown will affect SportPesa's customers, who will be unable to receive their winnings.

Safaricom has also requested that the BLCB inform the public through the media about the shutdown of the paybill numbers.

The affected companies include SportPesa, Betin, Betway, Betpawa, Elitebet, Easybet, Dafabet, Atari gaming, 1Xbet, and Mozzartbet.

Lastly, the Member of Parliament for Taita William Kamket has dismissed claims that the KANU party is afraid to announce its presidential candidate for the 2022 elections.

Kamket stated that the party's leader, Gideon Moi, has not announced his candidacy yet, and this is a clear indication that he respects the current government.

However, Kamket warned that once the party announces its candidate, William Ruto will be taught a lesson in politics.
