On February 14, 2022, SK Macharia, a prominent media owner, threw his weight behind Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga's quest to become the county's Governor.
Macharia, who has publicly supported ODM leader Raila Odinga's presidential bid under the Azimio la Umoja Movement, attended Wanga's gubernatorial campaign launch on Sunday.
Wanga is the sole woman aspirant in the gubernatorial race, which has attracted eleven candidates, including County Secretary Isaiah Ogwe, who is reportedly eyeing the top seat.
Wanga's bid has sparked speculation within ODM, with questions surrounding whether she will contest for the Azimio coalition party ticket or ODM, a constituent party and founder member of the movement.
Notably, several high-ranking officials from the county, including Governor Cyprian Awiti and Senator Moses Kagwang, were absent from Wanga's launch.
Wanga has promised to reform healthcare and ensure the actualization of universal healthcare, stating, 'My goal is to renovate and expand the Homa Bay teaching and Referral Hospital to meet the level five requirements.'
She also vowed to lead the fight against graft in Homa Bay, saying, 'I want to make Homa Bay part of the National grand coalition against corruption.'
