On July 11, 2019, Senegal secured a semi-final spot in the Africa Cup of Nations with a narrow 1-0 win over Benin at Cairo's 30 June Stadium.
Idrissa Gana Gueye scored the winning goal in the 70th minute, setting up the move and then finishing much to the relief of Africa's top-ranked team.
The goal was one of the few highlights in a largely laboured affair, with Senegal struggling to break down their determined opponents.
Benin, who finished with 10 men after defender Olivier Verdon was sent off, had a couple of chances, but Senegal's goalkeeper Alfred Gomis was equal to the task.
Senegal will feature in the semi-finals for a fourth time, but on the first occasion since 2006. Their best Cup of Nations achievement was finishing runners-up in 2002.
