Published on July 11, 2019, DNA tests have implicated Joseph 'Jowie' Irungu in the murder of Monica Kimani, a 28-year-old Kenyan woman found dead in her apartment in Nairobi's Kilimani area on September 20, 2018.
According to the police, DNA tests on semen found on Kimani's body and other samples from under her nails confirmed with a 99.9 per cent accuracy that they belonged to Irungu.
The investigators also found fingerprints on Kimani's body that matched those of Irungu, and bloodstains on a sofa set in the apartment.
Police believe the killer used a knife to cut Kimani's throat and immersed her two mobile phones in water, which were later recovered and analyzed.
Forensic tests on pieces of cloth also provided crucial clues, police said.
Irungu was seen in the company of another person near the crime scene, but the identity of the person has yet to be established.
Police have arrested a second suspect, Caspal Kasaine, who was arrested after it was established that Irungu had used his gun in a suicide attempt in Maribe's house at Royal Park Estate in Lang'ata on September 21, hours after Kimani's body was found.
