On July 10, 2019, Nairobi County boss Mike Mbuvi Sonko nominated five new County Executive Committee (CEC) members, amidst a crisis at the county government.
Lucia Mulwa was nominated to replace Janet Ouko, who resigned as CEC for Education, Youth Gender Sports Culture and Social Services, citing intimidation and mistreatment by the Governor.
Dr. Stella Bosire Otieno will take over as the new CEC for Health, while Winfred Gathangu will be in charge of Finance and Economic Planning.
Others are Pauline Kaihiga Waititu (CEC Public Service Management and Devolution) and Sanjeev Kaur Sonia Birdi (Environment).
According to Sonko, he warned executives that they will be held accountable if they misuse county funds, and he will not sit back and watch as cash is misappropriated.
“In my first term, I gave the CECs a one-year contract. I was not conversant with the Cabinet system and I did not know some of them very well and that is why I gave them a contract for only one year,” he added.
