On Wednesday, Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha addressed the press, stating that school prefects do not have the prerogative to beat up or 'discipline' fellow students.
He further urged Kenyan school principals to take control of their institutions, adding that the report should also entail any necessary disciplinary action taken against any students found culpable.
Prof. Magoha ordered the principal of Nairobi School to table a report on the allegations of bullying by next week, following an incident where a Form 2 student was allegedly beaten by prefects.
He stated, 'For the two schools in particular, Nairobi School and Sawagongo High School, I would want a report on my desk by next week as to why a child was battered in those schools. I would also want to know who did it and what action has been taken.'
Prof. Magoha's comments come a day after a 12-member team was appointed to probe the incident, which includes officials from the Teachers Services Commission, the Nairobi regional education office, and the Nairobi School principal himself.
The 15-year-old boy, who was reportedly beaten over a tie, has been withdrawn from the school and currently needs an urgent brain surgery, according to a consultant radiologist's report.
The radiologist's report, dated July 8, 2019, concluded that the boy has obstructive hydrocephalus; an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain.
