Published on July 10, 2019, statistics by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) reveal a significant 173% increase in internet subscribers between 2014 and 2018.

The launch of SEACOM fibre cable in 2009 and its subsequent uptake led to a 95% reduction in internet costs, making internet connection more accessible and affordable.

As a result, internet access has become more widespread, particularly through mobile phones, which account for over 90% of global internet access via mobile devices.

Telecommunications companies have noted an increase in sim card holders, contributing to the growth of digital internet users. However, the number of smartphone users has decreased over time, possibly due to the affordability of internet access through computers at cyber cafes.

Kenya's digital migration in 2015 led to increased internet access through mobile subscriptions, with a surge in demand for popular internet sites as subscribers grew.

According to statistics, Whatsapp and Facebook have been the most used internet platforms in Kenya since 2014, with an average usage rate of 70%.

Internet bundle deals offered by telcos have contributed to the popularity of these social media platforms, allowing for free or cheaper access.

Following Facebook and Whatsapp, the most used internet platforms in Kenya are YouTube and Instagram, widely used for sharing content.

Twitter is also among the top internet platforms, with one-third of internet users identified as Kenyans on Twitter (KOT).

Facebook tops the list as the most trending platform, with a high sharing coverage and trending topics, rated at 83%.

In Kenya in 2019, the most trending internet sites include Google.com, YouTube, and online news local websites such as Standard Media, Nation Media, and Tuko.co.ke.

Betting sites like Sportpesa, Betin, and 1xBet are also among the most popular internet sites.
