On July 10, 2019, the Federal Government of Somalia reaffirmed its stance on the maritime border dispute with Kenya, dismissing claims of a change in position.

The dispute, currently before the International Court of Justice, centers on a narrow triangle in the Indian Ocean, approximately 100,000 square kilometers in size, believed to hold significant oil and gas deposits.

Kenya had accused Somalia of auctioning off oil blocks in the disputed area, a claim Somalia has vehemently denied.

"We unequivocally deny the fake news reported by some media outlets indicating a change of the position of the Federal Government of Somalia regarding the [maritime border] case that is before the International Court of Justice," said Abdinur Mohamed Ahmed, director of communication of Somalia's Presidency, in a statement.

The Office of the Attorney General has launched an investigation into the sources of the fake news.
