Between October 2018 and June 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko dominated Kenyan news coverage, a report by TIFA has revealed. Published on July 10, 2019, the Kenya Media Landscape Report found that Sonko received 28 percent of the coverage, followed by Ferdinand Waititu (Kiambu) with 14 percent.
Other governors who received significant coverage include Migori's Okoth Obado (11 percent), Mombasa's Hassan Joho (10 percent), and Kirinyaga's Anne Waiguru (8 percent). At the other end of the spectrum, Nakuru's Lee Kinyanjui received the least coverage at 1 percent.
President Uhuru Kenyatta emerged as the most mentioned personality in Kenyan news at 20 percent during the same period, followed by Deputy President William Ruto at 13 percent and opposition leader Raila Odinga at 8 percent.
When it comes to national politics, DP Ruto led with 27.88 percent, followed by President Kenyatta at 20.76 percent and Raila at 18.04 percent. Under the Corruption theme, President Kenyatta and his deputy Ruto followed closely with 17.43 percent and 13.13 percent respectively.
Interior CS Fred Matiang'i topped the Crime theme with 27.88 percent, followed by President Kenyatta at 9.62 percent and Obado at 8.36 percent. Sports CS Amina Mohammed emerged as top under the Education theme due to her previous stint in that docket.
“CS Amina Mohammed's mention under education is linked to the release of national exams results, students placement, and the new curriculum,” the report reads.
