On July 10, 2019, police in Kwale County received a report from Good Samaritans about a 10-year-old pupil being caned by his parents in Jeza A village.

Matuga sub-county police Chief Darson Gababa led the rescue operation, which involved police officers intervening to stop the parents from whipping the child in turns.

According to Gababa, the neighbours who knew the situation had reported the matter to the police, highlighting the need for child abuse awareness campaigns in the region.

The boy was taken to Kwale town by police and was found to be extremely weak, barely able to speak or move. He had endured days of torture and beatings, with his abusive parents refusing to feed him.

At some point, the boy had lost consciousness during the ordeal. He was taken to Kwale County Hospital for treatment.

Police have placed both his parents in custody at Kwale Police Station, where they are being interrogated.
