Malkia Strikers, the national women's volleyball team, kicked off their campaign at the Women's African Volleyball Nations Championship with a straight sets win against Algeria on July 9, 2019, at the 6th October Indoor Arena in Cairo, Egypt.
The nine-time Africa champions, led by Italian coach Shailene Ramdoo, dominated the match from the onset, securing sets of 25-19, 25-21, and 25-21 to seal the win.
The victory marked a strong start for the East African queens, who are determined to reclaim the title they lost to hosts Cameroon two years ago.
Earlier in the day, defending champions Cameroon edged Botswana 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-10) in the opening match of the biennial competition, which has attracted seven teams.
On Wednesday, July 10, 2019, Malkia Strikers will face Botswana at 5pm, before taking on holders Cameroon on Thursday.
