Published on July 10, 2019, a report by TIFA Research revealed that the advertising sector in Kenya is a lucrative business, with various media platforms, including Radio, TV, and Print, reaping significant revenue from advertising.
Radio stands out as the most popular medium for advertising, with a large audience and numerous free-to-air radio stations available. This has contributed to its dominance in the advertising sector.
According to the report, 2017 saw the highest advertising spends in all years, primarily due to the fact that it was a campaign year. However, in 2018 and 2019, the Betting and Gambling sector took control of Kenya's advertising sector, driven by increased competition.
Notably, in 2018 alone, an estimated Sh91.5 billion was spent on advertising, with the Gambling sector accounting for 22 percent of the total advertising spend that year. The Finance sector followed closely, with 14 percent, while Food and Communication/Beverages sectors accounted for 9 percent and 8 percent, respectively.
Consistency is key in the advertising sector, with Safaricom and the Government of Kenya maintaining their top spots as big spenders from 2014 to the first half of 2019. Coca-Cola also featured frequently as a top spender in advertising.
