On July 9, 2019, celebrated media personality Janet Mbugua took to social media to express her outrage over a skit aired by Ebru TV, which she claimed normalized street harassment.
According to Mbugua, the skit, which was part of Ebru TV's show 'Ebru Jibonge,' featured a male actor making aggressive approaches towards women in the streets, touching them, and launching verbal attacks on them.
'This is street harassment. This is a violation. If someone doesn't see that, they're part of the problem. It's wrong and this should be taken seriously,' Mbugua tweeted.
Her comments sparked a wave of criticism and demands for an apology from Ebru TV, with many fans and personalities expressing their outrage over the skit.
One fan tweeted, 'I felt violated just watching it. Like, seriously!' while another fan said, 'This is so uncouth! Very disturbing indeed.'
Ebru TV later responded to the criticism, stating that some of their shows, including 'Ebru Jibonge,' are 'sexual harassment by any definition.'
However, the apology came too late, as the damage had already been done, and the station faced widespread backlash for normalizing street harassment.
