Published on July 10, 2019, a study by Pantene expert hairstylist Barney Martin shed light on the optimal hair washing frequency for various hair types.

According to Martin, daily hair washing is not recommended for most people, as it strips the hair of its natural oils. Instead, individuals with greasy or oily hair should shampoo every other day and rinse with water on the days in between.

Those with thick, curly hair should limit their washing to every third day, as their hair is more prone to drying out and dehydration. Rinsing without shampoo on the days in between washes and using a conditioner during proper washes can help maintain the health of curly hair.

Individuals with fine hair may experience limpness between washes, but daily washing is not the solution. Every other day should be sufficient, and a spritz of water can help remove excess oils.

Even gym enthusiasts and swimmers are not exempt from Martin's rule. They should try rinsing with water and using dry shampoo after workouts, while swimmers should wash their hair with shampoo after each swim to remove chlorine or salt water.
