Published on September 15, 2019, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has proposed collecting social media information from immigrants applying for various benefits, including citizenship, asylum, and green cards through marriage.
The proposal, outlined in a Federal Register notice, aims to enhance national security vetting by requiring applicants to provide their social media user identifications and associated platforms used over the past five years.
According to the notice, 19 social media platforms are included in the list, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, Reddit, Flickr, Tumblr, and Pinterest.
As part of the proposal, DHS is collecting public comment until November 4th. If approved, application forms will be updated to include the request for social media information.
